Ethereum Upgrade 'Dencun' Successfully Deployed

Ethereum's highly anticipated Dencun upgrade has successfully deployed to mainnet, marking one of the most significant technical milestones for the network since The Merge in 2022. The upgrade introduces proto-danksharding via EIP-4844, a change that fundamentally alters how Layer 2 networks interact with Ethereum's base layer.

The core innovation of Dencun is the introduction of "blobs" — a new type of data storage that is cheaper and more efficient than the existing calldata method. Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync can now post transaction data to Ethereum as blobs rather than calldata, dramatically reducing their costs.

The results have been immediate and dramatic. Within hours of the upgrade going live, transaction fees on major L2 networks dropped by 80-95%. Arbitrum fees fell from an average of $0.50 per transaction to under $0.02.

The upgrade proceeded without incident, a testament to the extensive testing conducted on the Goerli, Sepolia, and Holesky testnets over the preceding months.
