French carmaker Renault is preparing to dissolve its electric vehicle and software arm Ampere Holding and absorb its activities into the wider group from 1 July.
Reuters, citing its sources, reported that the move is aimed at streamlining the organisation, reducing costs, and accelerating the implementation of future projects.
It would represent the second major shift under new CEO François Provost away from strategies pursued by his predecessor Luca de Meo, who departed last year to join luxury group Kering.
In December, Renault announced it would shut down the car-sharing operations of its Mobilize subsidiary, with its energy and data businesses being brought back into the group.
Ampere was launched in November 2023 as what Renault described as Europe’s first pure-play business focused on electric vehicles and software, alongside plans for a stock market flotation.
That listing was dropped in early 2024 after the company judged market valuations to be inadequate.
According to the report, Renault later said that abandoning the IPO provided an opportunity to review Ampere’s governance and operating model, streamline the structure and enhance the unit’s contribution while retaining what had originally made it effective.
Since September, Ampere has been led by Renault Group CTO Philippe Brunet and is now expected to serve as the company’s advanced engineering hub for electric vehicles and software.
Its electricity division plants in northern France, along with its engine facility, would once again become direct Renault subsidiaries.
Sources said the reorganisation has been presented to trade unions and is not expected to change employment conditions or contracts for most of the employees affected.
Recently, Renault unveiled its new Filante hybrid crossover vehicle at a launch event held in South Korea.
The new model, based on Chinese automaker Geely’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, will be produced at Renault Korea’s Busan plant and will go on sale in South Korea in March 2026, before being shipped to markets in South America and the Gulf States region.
