UBS has joined forces with the University of Oxford to launch the Oxford-UBS Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), a strategic initiative designed to pioneer cutting-edge research and drive the practical application of AI within the financial services sector.
The new Centre represents a ground-breaking interdisciplinary partnership involving UBS, Oxford Saïd Business School, and the University’s Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) division. Led by a newly endowed UBS Professor for Applied AI, the facility will be supported by a dedicated team of 20 researchers focusing on independent projects and joint initiatives where academic findings are tested against real-world banking scenarios.
Bridging academia and application

The collaboration aims to move beyond theoretical models to produce practical tools that can be implemented at scale. The research mandate is split into three critical areas: AI and Society, covering governance, sustainability, and the Future of Work; AI for Business and Economy, examining innovation and ecosystem transformation; and AI Futures, which explores emerging paradigms and model developments.
Mike Dargan, UBS group chief operations and technology officer, described the technology as a “fundamental opportunity” to change how the bank operates and creates value. “We are delighted that UBS will be partnering with the University of Oxford to foster pioneering AI research and develop practical tools and solutions that can be implemented at scale across our firm, accelerating our journey to become a fully AI-enabled institution and shaping the future of financial services,” Dargan said.
Multidisciplinary approach
The partnership is distinct in its ability to draw intellectual capital from both Oxford’s business school and its scientific research division. Professor Irene Tracey, vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford, welcomed the collaboration as a union of a world-leading university and a top-tier financial institution.
“This dynamic multidisciplinary partnership will lead to pioneering new AI research solutions and practical applications at a time of unprecedented technological change,” Tracey commented. “We are grateful to UBS for their vision and support, enabling us to launch the Oxford-UBS Centre for Applied AI.”
As a leading wealth manager, UBS intends to harness the Centre’s output to deliver enhanced client solutions and increase employee productivity, positioning the bank at the forefront of the AI-driven shift in global finance.
